Beyond its witty dialogue and sophisticated mystery, the six-film saga starring William Powell and Myrna Loy is a tribute to Martinis, romance, and effortless style. Powell plays Nick Charles, an urbane detective with a dry wit, while Loy’s Nora Charles is his equally stylish, equally tipsy wife.

These are movies where the characters start drinking when they get out of bed and don’t stop until the case is solved—several days (and countless cocktails) later. Yet, despite the sheer volume of drinks, no one gets falling-down drunk. The secret? Smaller cocktails. Unlike today’s oversized Martinis, the glasses used by Nick and Nora were about a third the size of the modern versions. As Nick quips in one scene, after handing Nora a drink:

"This will make six Martinis," he says. She orders five more.
